START WITH THE BASICS
What is self storage?
Think of it as extra space away from home or work. You arrange a storage unit or suitable space, bring in the belongings you want to keep, and access them under the arrangements agreed with the team.
It can help when your moving dates do not line up, building work takes over a room, stock levels rise or the garage becomes too full to use. The first step is deciding what needs a home and how often you will want to reach it.
Lockdown Storage offers individual containers, business storage, caravan and motorhome storage, and fenced compounds. Tell us what you are storing and we will discuss the available options, costs and practical details before you commit.
FROM FIRST MESSAGE TO MOVE-IN
How storage works.
A clear plan makes storage easier. Here is what to expect at each stage, from asking your first question to putting your belongings into their new space.
Tell us what you need
Call or WhatsApp us with a list of your belongings, the space you have in mind and your preferred start date. Photos and measurements of large items help us understand your needs.
Choose your space
We discuss suitable available storage and a quotation. Ask about viewing the space, the rental period, access arrangements and anything you need to bring before deciding.
Agree the arrangements
Confirm the storage agreement, payment arrangements and move-in date with the team. Check what is included, what needs to be arranged separately and the notice requirements.
Move in and use your space
Pack your items, plan how you will transport them and follow the agreed arrival instructions. Arrange your belongings so the things you need most often remain easy to reach.

FOR A CHANGE OF ADDRESS
Moving house?
Give yourself breathing space.
A house move rarely happens in one perfectly timed step. You might need to leave one property before the next is ready, move in stages, or make your current home easier to view. Storage gives you somewhere to put the belongings that do not need to move with you straight away.
Start with a room-by-room list: beds, sofas, dining furniture, appliances and the number of boxes. Measure the largest pieces, especially anything that cannot be taken apart. Share your likely dates, even if they are still provisional.
Keep everyday essentials, documents and the things you will need on your first night separate. Pack the rest by room and label boxes clearly so you can find them when you settle in. Tell the team if you expect several deliveries or need to move belongings in stages.
MAKE ROOM FOR THE WORK
Storage while you renovate.
From a single-room refresh to a larger refurbishment, temporary space can help you organise the belongings that need to be kept clear of the work. Confirm that your items are suitable for container storage before booking.
Clear the working area
Moving furniture and boxes out of the way can make a decorating or renovation project easier to organise. Decide which rooms need to be cleared first and which items you will still use at home.
Plan around the project
Building schedules can change. Explain your expected timeline and ask how the rental arrangements work if the project takes longer. Check availability before committing to a move-out date.
Bring things back in stages
Return belongings when the relevant rooms are ready. A labelled inventory helps you retrieve the right furniture and boxes without unpacking everything at once.
KEEP WHAT MATTERS
A home with more space to live.
Sometimes you are not moving anywhere. You simply need the spare room back, a clearer garage or somewhere for belongings that are useful only part of the year. Storage can help you make room while you decide what should stay at home.
Separate the things you want to keep from the things you plan to sell, donate or recycle. Store with a purpose: give each group a label and write down when you are likely to need it again. That helps you choose an appropriate amount of space.
If you will collect items regularly, mention this when you enquire. It is useful to leave an accessible route through your stored belongings and place frequently used items near the front, rather than filling every gap on move-in day.
USEFUL FOR
The things you want to keep.
- Furniture you are keeping for a future home
- Seasonal belongings that take up room
- Boxes while you reorganise the house
- Items you need to sort gradually
Suitability depends on the item and storage conditions. Ask the team about anything valuable, delicate or sensitive to temperature and moisture.
A LITTLE PLANNING GOES A LONG WAY
Your household storage plan.
A useful enquiry does not need to be complicated. A few photos, a rough inventory and the dimensions of your largest items give us a better starting point than a guess at the container size.
Write an inventory
List the items you intend to bring and keep a copy of the list with you. Numbering boxes makes it easier to record what is inside without writing the full contents on every side.
Measure the awkward pieces
Large wardrobes, sofas, tables and appliances can determine how much space you need. Include anything with an unusual shape, and note which furniture can be dismantled.
Think about access
Decide whether the contents will stay untouched or whether you will visit for particular items. The second option usually calls for a more accessible layout, rather than the tightest possible packing.
ROOM TO KEEP GROWING
Storage that supports your business.
Extra storage can help when business belongings outgrow your existing premises. It may be seasonal inventory, equipment between jobs, office furniture during a move or supplies that you need to keep organised away from your everyday workspace.
Begin with the purpose of the space. Tell us what will be stored, the approximate volume, how often you need access and the size of the items involved. For palletised goods, include the loaded pallet dimensions rather than the pallet footprint alone.
We can then discuss suitable available storage and the rental arrangements. Please explain any special handling needs or unusual materials before booking. Storage suitability should be agreed in advance, especially where the contents need particular environmental conditions.
BUILDERS · CONTRACTORS · TRADES
Keep tools and materials organised.
Storage can help free up a van, garage or workspace. The right arrangement starts with knowing what you want to bring, how it will be packed and how you expect to use the space.
Between projects
Create an inventory of the tools and equipment you need to store between jobs. Separate everyday kit from less frequently used equipment so your storage layout reflects how you actually work.
Before bringing materials
Check that each material is suitable and allowed. Tell us about the contents, packaging and any handling requirements. Hazardous materials and anything creating a fire risk are subject to restrictions.
Plan your collection routine
Explain the kind of vehicle you will use and how often you expect to visit. Confirm the access and loading arrangements for the specific storage space before planning regular collections.
FOR STOCK THAT NEEDS A HOME
Make room for busy periods.
Seasonal peaks, a new range or a larger stock order can put pressure on your existing space. A separate storage area may help you organise stock without allowing it to spread through the rest of your premises.
Group items by product, project or season, and keep a record of quantities and box locations. Put the lines you expect to collect first where they are easy to reach. Avoid relying on memory when several boxes look the same.
Tell us if goods are sensitive to temperature or moisture, or require any special conditions. Ask about suitability before moving them into a container. Delivery acceptance, handling equipment and any operational use of the space should also be discussed separately.
SEND US THESE DETAILS
A better brief.
A more useful quote.
- What the goods are and how they are packed
- Number and dimensions of boxes or loaded pallets
- When you expect to move stock in and out
- Your access and loading requirements
- Any special conditions the contents require
WHEN YOUR WORKPLACE IS CHANGING
Office moves and business changes.
Relocating a business involves more than choosing a new address. Desks, chairs, shelving and boxed equipment may need somewhere to go while the next premises are prepared. A clear inventory helps you separate essential working equipment from items that can be stored temporarily.
Label furniture parts together and keep fixings in clearly marked bags. Record which team or room the contents belong to, so they can be returned in a sensible order. If documents, electronics or other sensitive items are involved, discuss the storage conditions and suitability before arranging the move.
Share the expected dates and whether you will move everything at once or in phases. We will discuss available space; your chosen transport and handling arrangements should be planned alongside it.
8FT, 20FT & 40FT CONTAINERS
Understand the space
before you book.
A container can provide a defined space for a collection of household or business belongings. But the name of a container size does not tell you everything about how your particular items will fit. Shape, packaging and the way you need to access the contents all matter.
Choose from 8ft × 8ft containers at £80 per month, 20ft × 8ft containers at £120 per month, or 40ft × 8ft containers at £210 per month, all including VAT. Ask the team for internal dimensions, doorway measurements and current availability. If you can arrange a viewing, use it to picture where large items will go and how you will load them.
Share the items that cannot be stacked, the furniture that can be dismantled and any boxes you will need to reach regularly. This makes the discussion more useful than choosing on floor space alone. Padlocks can be supplied for £50, refundable if handed back. A key fob for 24-hour access costs £10, refundable if handed back.
CHOOSE SPACE WITH A PURPOSE
How much storage do you need?
There is no single answer based only on the number of rooms in a house or the number of boxes in a business. The most useful starting point is the size, shape and accessibility needs of the items themselves.
Start with your belongings
List the contents rather than choosing a size first. Include measurements for the largest pieces and a realistic box count. Photos can help explain items that are difficult to describe.
Allow for the way you will use it
A tightly packed space works differently from a space you need to visit frequently. Tell us which items must remain accessible and whether you expect to add more belongings later.
Check before committing
Discuss available sizes and dimensions with the team. A viewing can help you assess the space. Confirm the cost of the actual option you choose, along with the rental terms.
FOR LARGER ITEMS AND BUSINESS GOODS
Pallets, equipment and awkward shapes.
If you plan to store pallets, send the length, width and total loaded height of each one. Include whether the load can be stacked safely and how it will be moved. Two pallets with the same footprint may need very different amounts of usable space.
Large equipment needs a similar check. Doorway clearance, weight, the route into the space and safe handling all matter. Confirm the relevant measurements and access arrangements with the team before organising transport.
For a useful capacity check, explain what you are bringing, ask for the available unit dimensions and agree the loading arrangements. Do not assume pallet trucks, lifting equipment or unloading assistance are included.
KNOW THE ARRANGEMENTS
Rental periods, payments and notice.
Your rental period
Short- and long-term needs can be discussed. Ask the team to confirm the minimum term, your start date and what happens if you need the space for longer than expected.
Payments
The published terms specify monthly payments in advance by standing order, due on the first working day. Any applicable deposit and initial payment are due by the start of the agreement.
When you leave
The published terms require one month’s notice ending on the last day of a month. Agree the departure process, remove your property, leave the space tidy and return supplied security items.
Read the full storage terms and confirm how they apply to your chosen option. Your quotation and agreement should answer the practical questions before you move in.
LOOK AFTER WHAT YOU STORE
Insurance and item suitability.
Before booking, check that your belongings and the proposed storage conditions are compatible. Items with special temperature, moisture, security or handling requirements need particular consideration.
Lockdown’s published terms state that property remains at your risk. Confirm suitable insurance and ask the team about any requirements or options before moving in. Keep an inventory and supporting records of valuable items.
The terms restrict hazardous materials, explosives, firearms, ammunition, animals and items creating fire, damp or mould risks. Check the full restrictions and ask about anything unusual. This helps establish whether the storage is right for you before you arrange transport.
